If you go by car from Mykonos Town, it takes about 25 minutes, and you may park behind the beach. There’s a rather infrequent bus (usually departing every 2 hours, depending on the season) from the Old Port terminal to Elia. Continue going over the rocks, and you arrive at Agrari Beach (see below). In July and August, when many can’t find space for their towel, the rocks are an alternative to the sand. That’s because you first see it covered in sunbeds and umbrellas, usually taken over by straight and gay couples, and only when you start walking to the right do you find the gay and nude. When you arrive at Elia, you don’t immediately get the sense that you’re at a mostly-gay beach.
Here’s your guide to Mykonos’ most gay-friendly beaches: In between these are secluded coves, for those who prefer privacy away from the crowds. At Paraga, just up the hill from now mostly-straight party beach Paradise, you’ll also see a small number of gay nude sunbathers. Neighboring Agrari gets those who can’t find a sunbed available or a spot to spread their towel at Elia, and Panormos is also popular with gay couples. Purchase Goat Trails here. All beaches in Mykonos are gay-friendly, and for many years the gay sun worshipers have flocked to Paradise and Super Paradise, before moving to Elia, which is now THE gay beach on the island. The intricate and well-tended condos will never last forever. When the summer season ends, the sex condos will most likely not survive the winter storms and the shifting of the tides and beach. Each cruising location is unique to its geography and the natural materials found nearby. The act of photographing these locations where men have sex is more of a documentation of a landmark, all of its history may be stripped but the nuances of sexual tension can still exist without human presence in the photographs. The seemingly simple landscape is incredibly complex, the natural monument is no longer what it seems once you are introduced to the history and the use of the sites at play. Within these beaches, the human altered landscape has been interpreted and created from the natural environment to increase positive sexual performances during the pursuit of anonymous sex. Over the years, unclothed men have developed rituals in walking these paths, wandering in and out of areas covered by dense brush, into open canyons marked by a single, almost mythical looking, untamed palm tree. On the edges of the beach near the canyon walls, “desire paths” can be found snaking through the landscape. Because of this, the beaches have made it popular for men cruising for anonymous gay sex. Famous for their hard to access and unstable “goat trails”, the hikes hold mythical and sacred qualities, far from the real world and society. Goat Trails examines the gay nude cruising beaches that are isolated and hidden up and down the coast of California.
